The front page carried nothing but notices and advertisements, with news buried at the end of page two. Today it is well respected upon principles of candor, honesty and honor.

Guardian ~ The Manchester Guardian was founded by John Edward Taylor in 1821. The paper's intention was the promotion of the liberal interest in the aftermath of the Peterloo Massacre and the growing campaign to repeal the Corn Laws that flourished in Manchester during this period. Their reputation was cemented by the collapse of the libel case brought against the paper by former Minister Jonathan Aitken. Following his fateful declaration to fight the case armed with only "the simple sword of truth and the trusty shield of British fair play", the Guardian uncovered crucial evidence that proved Aitken did not pay his own hotel bill at the Paris Ritz as he had claimed. Aitken was convicted of perjury and jailed in June 1999, and the investigations won the Guardian critical acclaim from all sides - including the prestigious Newspaper of the Year Award in both 1997 and 1998.

Pravda ~ The newspaper Pravda shut down less than a year before the 80th anniversary of its founding. The newspaper was a publication of the Communist Party, and, as such, it became a state-owned newspaper. Those who have studied the history of the Soviet press know that Pravda was shut down several times during the times of Tsarist Russia. The recently destroyed Communist Party (Aug. 22, 1991) and its team of journalists did not struggle for the Pravda newspaper or for its history. Instead, they registered a new paper with the same title shortly thereafter. At that time, a very serious split occurred in the editorial office. Over 90 percent of the journalists who had been working for Pravda until the coup d'etat of 1991 quit their jobs. They established their own version of the newspaper, which was then closed under government pressure.
These journalists had to take their fight to cyberspace, and the Internet newspaper PRAVDA On-Line was launched in January of 1999, the first Russian newspaper of its kind. We think that both the newly registered newspaper and PRAVDA On-Line have an equal moral right to continue the history of the newspaper that was closed by then-President Boris Yeltsin in August of 1991.

Taipei Times ~ Launched on June 15, 1999, the Taipei Times commits itself to "Bringing Taiwan to the World and the World to Taiwan."
